    Principal’s Message

This week I had the pleasure of spending some time at ‘Fairhaven’, our beautiful new site at Mallacoota. Together with a small group of Scotch staff, we finalised the appointment of our new Farm Manager and spent time touring MLC’s ‘Marshmead’ property. Our friends up the road were very generous in sharing their experience in running an extensive program with us. Although we are sometime away from finalising our plans, our thinking is progressing, and we have a clear path to follow as we seek to ultimately deliver a world class residential program for our boys.

The Â鶹´«Ã½AV Foundation’s 24-Hour Appeal commences next Thursday, and will raise funds for First Nations scholarships in the name of one of Australia’s most iconic athletes, Evonne Goolagong and her husband Roger Cawley. The appeal will be launched on Thursday 9 May at the annual President’s Dinner at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club. We are very fortunate to welcome Evonne and Roger as the evening’s Guests of Honour. close today at 5pm.

Every donation to this year’s 24-Hour Appeal will be quadrupled thanks to the generosity of our ‘matching donors’. The appeal will continue into Friday 10 May, which will be a casual dress day for all boys and staff. Everyone is encouraged to or bring a cash donation to school on the day. More details on the scholarship and appeal are available below.

Earlier in the year, I shared news of a strategic review of the APS Sport Program. This process is now underway and an update on the review is available here.

Lastly, I am pleased to announce our new High Performance Gym is now complete and all that is left is the arrival of a few more pieces of equipment. Thank you to those within the Scotch Family who have supported this transformation and I look forward to seeing the boys benefitting from this much improved space.

    God bless.

    Dr Scott Marsh
    Principal

Goolagong-Cawley First Nations Scholarship: 24 Hour Giving Day

Evonne Goolagong is a First Nations Australian who has inspired generations with her fair play both on and off the court. She has won the hearts and minds of her fellow Australians and sports fans worldwide. She exemplifies the notion that it is just as important to be a good sport as it is to be good at sport.

While her work on the court speaks for itself it is her work off it that further defines her legacy. She has championed opportunities for young First Nations tennis players to reach their own potential through her Academy – the Evonne Goolagong Academy. ‘If they’re not attending school then they’re not in my Academy’, says Evonne.

A shared belief that education is the burning light for the future of First Nations Australians unites Evonne and Scotch. Three students from Evonne’s Indigenous Tennis Academy have now attended Scotch, including last year’s School Captain Dion Whitfield, via the Â鶹´«Ã½AV Foundation’s First Nations Scholarship Program.

On Friday 10 May the Scotch Family is challenged to raise $1M in 24 hours! The 24-hour appeal will be launched at a fundraising dinner at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club on Thursday 9 April and a limited number of tickets for this event are still available ). Evonne Goolagong and Roger Cawley will be our Guests of Honour on the night. Every gift made during the 24-hour period will be quadrupled thanks to the generosity of our ‘matching donors’ who will be named on the giving website.

Junior and Senior School students – and staff – may wear casual clothes on Friday 10 May in honour of the appeal. Evonne Goolagong and Roger Cawley will be guests at Junior and Senior School assemblies on the day. when the appeal opens at 8pm on Thursday 9 May.

    Head of Junior School Message

On Monday we began a new focus in our Junior School assemblies. Following last term’s focus on understanding how we can bring people from ‘them’ to ‘us’, this term we are looking at the concept of people being more than what they may seem.

At each assembly this term, a staff member will share something about themselves that the boys may not know. Staff may share a special talent, a learning journey they are on or simply a moment of challenge in their life that has resulted in personal growth.

This week Mr Ganguly-Schornikow (5S) spoke to the boys about his journey from being a Year 7 student at Scotch to a principal artist with Opera Australia, and now a teacher in Year 5. He shared the difficulties he faced at school with his ethnicity followed by the benefits he gleaned from restorative conversation. Mr Ganguly-Schornikow shared the moment his music teacher spotted his singing talent and called his parents to reinforce the value of taking singing lessons and the moment he was given an Opera CD which opened his eyes to a new world. He reflected on his life changing when he became a parent and the shift from glamour onstage to glamour at 3.00am when reading stories to his daughters.

Mr Ganguly-Schornikow spoke of his career as an Opera singer and shared that he had not performed solo for around four years. He delivered the message that sometimes it is better to get things done than be perfect and that he had prepared a song for the boys knowing he was not quite at his previous standard. This did not faze him as he knew it would enrich his day and hoped it might for others.

Mr Ganguly-Schornikow sang Stefano Donaudy’s ‘O del mio amato ben’. It was beautiful to watch the boys react, during and after the song. He received rapturous applause from the audience and left an indelible mark on everyone that afternoon. I thank him for showing vulnerability and sharing his journey with us all. There may be a few requests for singing lessons coming your way!

I look ahead to the next couple of weeks and am buoyed by the upcoming community connection opportunities. I am excited to attend the Mothers’ Day Lunch on the same day that the entire school will come together to raise funds for the Goolagong-Cawley First Nations Scholarship. The boys will look forward to spending next Friday in casual clothes but more importantly the opportunity to listen to Evonne Goolagong share her story.

    Head of Senior School Message

In the past week, two activities have helped me to understand what is special about a Scotch education.

Firstly, the commemoration of Anzac Day in the Memorial Hall. Built for the purpose of honouring the fallen of World War I, the service this year was a respectful occasion, with a past student who had served in the armed forces attending and embodying to our boys the values of service and sacrifice. These values are embedded in the culture of Scotch and exemplified by the students, families and staff who have lost their lives in the service of their country.

It is this ‘living history’ at Scotch that provides a strong moral framework for our students, who are invited to feel a part of an entity greater than themselves; a community, a family, that has withstood time, world wars and all sorts of change, to emerge as a strong, uniting, and powerful force for good in the modern era.

I hope that our current Senior School students understand the responsibilities placed on them, as the current custodians of the Scotch name and reputation. With the privilege of an education at Scotch comes the responsibility to act with courage, serve your community and represent the school, as boys and young men, of good character.

The second event places Scotch at the forefront of contemporary educational issues, as we work with our Year 10 students in the area of respectful relationships this week. Guiding our students to develop the ability to flourish in their relationships has never been more important, given the recent focus on violence against women in our community. As part of our programs, our Year 10 boys complete several activities, including student led presentations and discussions alongside the Year 10 students at MLC.

Understanding the legal definitions, responsibilities and obligations in this area are vital. As is a discussion and understanding of the ethical and moral issues that arise, alongside mature relationships. For some boys, this is an immediate part of their world and for others, it is some years off; but in all instances, it is a landscape that in our contemporary world, they need to be aware of. We want our students (and I am sure you want your sons) to be considerate and empathetic, to be supportive friends, partners, relatives, and members of society. We want our students to act with good character in the most intimate of their relationships and to be upstanders when their mates are not doing the right thing.

I commend the boys of Year 10 for their measured, mature, and engaged approach to the material and their capacity to reflect on these important societal issues, with students from a girls’ school, in an appropriately respectful and mature manner. They gain much from being able to hear and understand the views of young women in relation to these important subjects.

    Road Safety around Scotch

Parents are reminded to model road safety when driving and walking around Scotch. It is imperative that we are safe in our school environment, and teachers speak regularly to the boys who ride bikes and scooters to school about keeping safe, wearing helmets and travelling at a safe speed for both their own safety and that of others.

Please consider the following during peak drop off and pick up times:

    • Drive in to the drop off spaces only when your child is there ready to be collected and drive off as soon as you are able. Please do not use these spaces for telephone conversations or activities that take up time and mean others are not able to use the zone to collect their children
    • Watch the pedestrian crossings and stop for all pedestrian traffic
    • Drive in a safe and respectful manner, considering the needs of others
    • Where possible, pick up your child in streets further away from the school to reduce the traffic, or better yet, encourage your son to take public transport or walk, so that he grows in independence and a sense of responsibility

  • Health & Wellbeing

Each week in The Torch, our Psychology and Health teams will explore a topic related to boys’ health and wellbeing.Ìý

This week, we’re talking about anxiety.

Most young people today experience anxiety at some point in their life. Sometimes that slight rush of anxiety that occurs prior to an exam or sporting event, can enhance their performance. However, experiencing too much anxiety, over long periods of time, can be damaging to their health and wellbeing. There is a difference between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ anxiety.

Statistics show, that the psychological health of young people today is far worse than it was a generation ago. This is having an adverse affect on children in both primary and secondary levels. Some of their issues of concern include stress, school, study, body image and friendship.

Parents need to be aware of the warning signs of ‘bad’ anxiety. There are preventative measures parents can implement as well as teaching kids the skills to cope more efficiently with their anxiety.

If you have any concerns about your son, please contact the Psychology team for further information or seek medical or professional help.
